Hi Everyone,

Once again, the glitter of West Union talent has caught someone's eye... The WV Municipal League annual calendar is always on the lookout for great photos. Debbie Priceloved the covered wagon shot on our webpage ( http://westunion-wv.com/ ). It was a winner (but, of Course...) Many thanks to the photographer, Sheila 'Snoopy' Sutton, for the permission to use this. Snoopy just quietly keeps on giving her talent to West Union. She paints the wall on Main Street, she painted in the library, the WestUnionFest Mermaid photo-op, many photos on the website are hers. (And, yes, it is true that a lot of donations are due to our saying, "Oh, how marvelous – may we have that?" hahahaha)

Dave Leda's country band that he performs with - Jim Bunch and the Depot House Band – is playing on the second Thursday of each month at the Senior Citizens' in West Union. They play along with the Wheels of Country (Ray Hileman) from 6:30 - 9:00pm. It's free to the public and some refreshments are provided. It's "old" country mostly and is geared primarily for middle aged and older folks. Let's meet there and show them how much we appreciate it? Thanks, Dave!

Sunday, October 23, there will be Irish Road Bowling at Fort New Salem! Irish Road Bowling is an ancient sport, played by Union and Confederate Irish troops during the Civil War. Proceeds support the restoration at New Fort Salem. Pre-register: 304 782-1318 Contact: 304 695-2220, or director@fortnewsalemfoundation.org

You'll be delighted at the changes at New Fort Salem already! The parking lot has been leveled and expanded and the road widened; French drains have been installed to remove rainwater from these historical buildings, sidewalks have been expanded and the blacksmith shop is renovated. Many more improvements are planned.

West Union people were a great success at the Apple Butter Festival! The Car Show (thanks, Larry Marrs) got raves, and the Doddridge County Historical Society booth broke records! Patricia Harris writes that they thank everyone who supported them by purchasing the Historical Society souvenirs. This support allows them to move forward in restoring the Hickory Ridge School as well as the other projects they anticipate in the near future.

And, speaking of the Historical Society, the Smithburg Depot will be open for the Heritage Arts Day at the end of the month.

And, let's just keep on speaking of the Historical Society (what a live-wire group), on October 23 at 1 p.m. the Historical Society will be going on a field trip to to the historical Jaco's Cave (famous for its Underground Railroad connection). You do not have to be a member to join them on that day. The group will meet at the Central Station exit off Interstate 50 west.

Historically also: Steve Jobs (1955-2011) touched a lot of us who never met him, and touched us in an amazing way. He took a technology that few understand and produced products that the average person could use on the first try. To the best of this editor's knowledge, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford were the last people to do that. R.I.P

Redistricting affects us all in ways that are not obvious. Take a look at the new plan. (Now is the time ~ we will have to live with this for 10 years once it is passed.) At this point we can encourage Acting Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin to veto this bill. He can be reached at 304-558-2000. Hi Everyone,

Cynthia McCloud tells us that there there's a regional coyote expert. Tom Bechdel has written a book and produced a video about hunting coyotes and protecting yourself and your family around them. "... we look like big Happy Meals to them -- they are so bold they will attack adults." Seems the Eastern coyote is a growing problem that has been seen in Preston County too. The Hickory Ridge Week at Doddridge County Fair was spectacular! Doddridge County Historical Society outdid itself by capping the week off with a Friday evening with Rita Faye. (Rita was born here, in Doddridge County. Now that she has established quite a name for herself in Nashville, Rita has not forgotten those who helped before she 'made it'. Her next appearance here will be with the Doddridge County Humane Society's 'Lost in the 50's with Rita Faye' on 9/17.) Rita plays the electric keyboard, banjo, and fiddle, while her husband plays the flat-top.

The Hickory Ridge School was built circa 1840 and this small log school has survived three moves and many abuses and neglects. It now thrives at theSnow Bird County Park near West Union thanks to the Doddridge County Historical Society. Still in need of repair, it continues to represent all that was, and is, good and honest and real in Doddridge County and in America. Step back to a time when life was about hard work, education and trying to make a life for the family. Inside the school are some of the artifacts of that bygone era, including a teacher's desk (that will make today's teachers marvel at their blessings). There are student's desks that bring new meaning to `earning your grade' and so much more. All Doddridge County residents can be very proud of the accomplishments of the Doddridge County Historical Society in the preservation of our past. The U.S. Census report for 2010 is now official – West Union has grown by 2.12%. Our population is now officially 825. See: http://data.news-leader.com/census/WV/cities/West%20Union%20town

Doddridge County Population is now 8,202 Yes, we are one of the few WV counties that grew! The winner(?) seems to be Branson, which topped more than 10,000 residents and has triggered an Environmental Protection Agency requirement for stricter stormwater runoff restrictions – other federal agencies are also taking a close look for regulations that may need to be enforced. Way to go, Branson! Keep running Point for us! <We like to be prepared!> :)

Last Saturday was a rousing success – FishFest broke all records, and what a wonderful time was had by all! Kudos to Brian and Hedy Lipscomb - Wonderful Event! Trophies will be presented at WestUnionFest (July 23) per our tradition. All other gifts and prizes were received with great excitement and are already in their new homes. Doddridge County Historical Society is full of busy bees... Next on their agenda is a float for WestUnionFest Parade (this editor's lips are sealed! But it is bigger than a breadbox – you're going to Love it!) On WestUnionFest, they plan a booth on Main Street as well as having the West Union Museum and Smithton Depot open. Then a field trip to Jaco's Cave on July 29, 2011. They have permission to access the property and we all look forward to the day! (Don't' forget the pictures to share on West Union's website...) Hi Everyone,

This issue is early in order to report a Boil Water Advisory for the Town of West Union. (Break in a main line was repaired yesterday and samples are already being tested.)

Japan is beginning a national campaign to grow sunflowers. It seems they absorb radioactivity. "The goal is to blanket radioactive areas with such a mass of color that NASA will be stunned."Gardeners are requested to grow sunflowers this year, then send their seeds to the stricken areas. This technique was discovered at Chernobyl. (see: http://www.ecaa.ntu.edu.tw/weifang/cea/sunflowers.htm ) Is this a possible project for local gardeners living in our high-radon areas?

Wabash Trading Post with their Open House and scheduled chain-saw carving demonstrations and West Union Baptist with their Kiddieland Inflatables have full days planned forWestUnionFest. Isn't it wonderful to live where there is such community spirit?

Pastor Dan Lipscomb is having a bake sale, crafts, and pony rides in Smithburg. With the Smithton Depot open, Smithburg will really hold its own this year. Tim Bailey, of West Union, is the new grand champion of the West Virginia Trucking Association's annual Truck Driving Championship. Nearly 50 drivers from 11 different companies competed in Charleston. Tim works for Con-way Freight in Clarksburg, and also won the 2011 Pre-Trip Inspection Award. The Doddridge County Historical Society has done wonders with cleaning and organizing exhibits at the Museum in West Union (getting ready for WestUnionFest, Oh, MY, Yes!). This morning they are beginning at Smithton Depot! Patti Harris tells us that the wagons will be moved outside so that you can climb into them (and also to leave more room inside for all those attending).

The Smithton Depot is where our "Train on the Tracks" 5K begins – AND, this year, Dan Lipscomb and his Real Life Ministry will be having booths there as well as pony rides.

Two new EPA pollution regulations will cost hundreds of thousands of jobs and electric rates will skyrocket 11 percent to over 23 percent (based on government data). Today is the Day! It's Municipal Election Day for Town of West Union elected officials. If you have not yet - then VOTE!

The last meeting of the Doddridge County Historical Society brought a change in officers. Patricia Richards Harris was elected President; Jack Calhoun was elected to remain Vice President; Sherri L Harris was elected Secretary/Treasurer. An advisory committee was formed to include Bill Calhoun, Jack Calhoun, andDorothy Bode. "The society belongs to everyone and will thrive better when everyone participates (whether that be in the form of opinions and ideas, physical input, financial support, or any other form). The need for a fundraising drive was agreed upon, to include applying for private, state and federal grants that are applicable to our society. Donations from local businesses and organizations were another consideration discussed. Other ideas are welcomed for this drive. It is for this reason we hope to see all of you on June 15, 2011, at the Senior Citizen's Building" <OOOOps! just realized my dues are overdue!> Secretary Sherri Harris is preparing a Member Directory which will include any members who wish to have their name, address, telephone and e-mail address or any combination thereof. Volunteers needed: Spare a bit of time to volunteer for the cleanup of both the Smithton Depot and the main Museum in West Union. Contactdoddridge_co.historical_society@yahoo.com for more info. The date for the cleanup will be announced later. Both will be open again for WestUnionFest!

Smithburg will actually be a Happening Place for WestUnionFest. Pastor Dan Lipscomb advises us that Real Life Ministry will have booths in Spencer Park at Smithburg, the DC Historical Society will have the Smithton Depot open – and it is the traditional start of the "Train on the Tracks" 5K.

The covered wagon ride will be available once more on the RailTrail. Wouldn't it be great if we could add additional rides for those of us who are not great walkers? Anyone have a hay wagon they could make available for the day?

Brian Lipscomb reports that there is a Record number of pre-registrations for FishFest this year! <It was a good move to change the date to a cooler one when the fish are bitin' and the people are not> Saturday, June 25 is getting CLOSER!

We have a water slide for WestUnionFest – sponsored by the West Union Volunteer Fire Department! With the great West Union Baptist Church Kiddielandinflatables, the kids really have something to look forward to!

Zombie Apocalypse – Your Tax Dollars at Work! The CDC now encourages citizens to get prepared for a zombie invasion, which the CDC says requires the same type of planning as hurricane season and other potential emergencies. The CDC says of the recommended first-aid supplies - "although you're a goner if a zombie bites you, you can use these supplies to treat basic cuts and lacerations that you might get during a tornado or hurricane."

Another spill! This one (Saturday) at Rush Run/England's Run is claimed to be a barrel of oil and fracing fluid – or maybe three barrels - or more – . WBOY, Channel 5 may have the story today.

FishFest is a Do Not Miss this year – Brian Lipscomb is going all out with prizes, T's, trophies, Door Prizes, and Goodie Bags for Children under 10. Hi Everyone,

The last newsletter was so overdue and overlong that necessarily longer items were trimmed for this one...   We hope you will forgive another long one, as a couple of items are so personal, they are difficult to trim.

Once upon a time, when the world was young and this editor had not even heard of West Union or knew what it would come to mean – there was a brilliant new novelist who burst on the scene with two books introducing himself as a new literary giant. It was the 60's and I mourned when we lost him, as there were only two; he secured the contract to write the screenplays for the movies that "The Edentree" and "The Innocents " became. Having seen so many artists bend under pressure and 'go for the money', my little wannabe-an-artist-group scorned him as a sell-out. In fact, I wrote to him, using the embarrassingly trite (even in those days) term "Gone Hollywood". TV was fairly new then – undeveloped and unexamined as an art-form (it was, essentially, televised radio). A few years later, as his scripts and burgeoning direction for "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide" recognized the potential of TV, and raised the artistic bar forever for anyone writing for this new art-form, I wrote to this stranger again and apologized. That letter he answered. (VBG)

After moving to the Town of West Union and finding he was a native son, I wrote to him again requesting permission to show one of his movies - free - for WestUnionFest. He graciously gave permission for two of his films produced by his "Dreamworks" company. Whenever possible, Mr. Ware filmed in West Virginia – and in Doddridge County. He never lost his base, or that universal, common touch, and many will recognize local names and landmarks throughout his Western genre.

On August 30, 2010, the world lost Clyde Ware. I like to think of it as 'exit stage left', and would be honored to meet him backstage someday.

Saturday is Christmas in Doddridge – presented by the Trillium Arts Guild. Don't miss it! Parade at 3PM, reception with Santa follows at the Doddridge County Senior Center.

The Town of West Union now has a Taxi Service – all handicap accessible vehicles. Rates (set by the WV PSC) are $2.00 for the 1st mile and and 25 cents for each additional 1/10th mi. WestUnionFest 129 Report

Winners of the Costume Contest – category 1: Robin Vanscoy, Director of the West Union Historic Walking Tour, in her lovely turn-of-the-century costume – category 2 Dawson Pumphrey, who entered as an 1881 Black Gorilla. Many thanks to the 2010 Costume Contest Judges: Virginia Nicholson, 2010 Doddridge Belle, Janice McMurdo, of McMurdo Sounds, and Town of West Union Councilman George Buechner.
First place winner in the "Pants on Fire" Liars' Contest was one of our out-of-state visitors: Marc Yergen, from PA, representing ECV. Second Place Prize Winner in the Liars' Contest was Waine Nicholson, of Doddridge County. Didi Depinho, of Doddridge County, won third place in the Liars' Contest. Many thanks to Councilman George Buechner for his outstanding management of the Liars' Contest once again.
The Cake Walk winner was Jerry Shultz, with second place going to Dawson Pumphrey.
Congratulations to all who ran the "Train on the Tracks" 5K in that brutal heat. Incredibly, as you've read (results published last week by Racemaster Dave Sandridge), many course records were broken.
Jessica Blandori, of West Union, won the Guestbook Drawing.
The lovely Dot Underwood once again represented the office of Governor Joe Manchin, III in giving out the 5K Trophies, presenting the Town with a Proclamation declaring July 23 and 24 as West Union Days and presenting our E Clampus Vitus guests with a Proclamation declaring Sunday, July 26, 2010 as Ephraim Bee Day.
A special ceremony was held for the West Union Volunteer Fire Department honoring their 75th year of service. Pat Heaster, in full uniform, assisted Ms Underwood in presenting Governor's Certificates of Appreciation of Service to these admirable and generous members of our community and of the WUVFD. Mandy Gogan photographed the event for us.
Rennie and Debbie Brown manned an extensive display of Ephraim Bee genealogy, compiled by Rennie – A beautiful binder containing this information plus photos of our irascible Mr. Bee was raffled. Karen Trent was the winner of this precious prize, and proceeds were donated to the Doddridge County Historical Society.
The Director, Brian Lipscomb, will submit the FishFest report, but all had a great time and it was quite a success. (Brian, don't forget to tell the story about the `Big One' – after quite a display of skill in reeling it in, it turned out to be a turtle!!!)
West Union Baptist Church outdid themselves in their participation. Not only was there free food for the kiddies, but games AND a huge inflatable!!

Josh Weekley has sent two grand pieces of news for us:

Cuylor Edgell recently completed his Freshman year at West Virginia Wesleyan. As a member of their track team, he set a conference championship record in the Decathlon at the WVIAC Conference Championships. He went on to be named to Outstanding Track Athlete for the championships as WVW won the conference title.

Clara Grandt recently won the Big East Championship in the 10,000 Meters. She then won the NCAA East Regional in the 10,000 Meters. She capped her college career by finishing in 4th place at the NCAA Championships in the 10,000 Meters. This earned her All-American status for the 3rd time this school year. She also earned All-American Honors in Cross Country and in Indoor Track. She also earned All-American Honors last year in outdoor track. This year's performance makes her a Four-time All-American. (Josh won't guarantee that Doddridge County has never had another 4-time All-American, but seriously doubts it!!)

Clara also just made her professional running debut on Saturday at the Greater Clarksburg 10K where she won the overall women's championship and the West Virginia women's championship and earned $2,000 for her efforts.

Sarah Sheets reminds us of the free summer movie series at Salem International University - (that's FREE to everyone). The outdoor movie series this summer is airing many new releases and blockbuster favorites on the campus lawn (rain location will be the T. Edward Davis Gymnasium).

Dot Underwood writes that the West Virginia Division of Tourism Regional Roundtable Discussions are being held again in an effort to provide one-on-one meetings between us, the tourism industry, and the Division staff. "These meetings offer the perfect opportunity for tourism industry members and the public to share ideas and voice their opinions," said Oshel Craigo, chairman of the West Virginia Tourism Commission. Topics will include the MAPP program, Civil War sesquicentennial, the WV Film Office and many others.

Marcellus Shale water issues / Bill number HB 4513 has passed. A good thing as it does belatedly address critical issues in the management of our precious water resource. Nevertheless, please write your representatives to request a moratorium on the issuance of permits (117 Marcellus permits have been issued already)

· There is no limit listed as to the quantity of water that may be taken from our creek, which, seasonally, runs dangerously low already. (multiple drillers frequently withdraw from the same source here)

· The requirement of liners to protect our water table has been removed. How did that happen? Much of Doddridge County operates on well water. Contamination of groundwater by fracking fluids is a very real concern in a county that has already suffered contamination of its water table (our Greenwood area)

· No guidance is provided for the protection of stream bank erosion and stability. Again, this is a concern for a county with major flood problems already.

The Greenwood Water Project has entered the final stage, so is there rest for the town? A little breather? Nope!! The Contract for Project Management on the Wabash Area of West Union's sewer extension / improvement project (between the Town of West Union and Region VI Planning and Development Council) was signed last week. Hi Everyone,

Between illness and weather we sure have some catching up to do!

First, we know how concerned everyone was about the heartbreaking January 13 fire at the Ritchie County Humane Society (RCHS). Fifty cats and 13 dogs perished in the fire. Through an Emergency Grant program, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation has provided a $2,500 grant to RCHS to purchase cages for temporary housing in other parts of the shelter. "This is exactly the type of need for which our emergency grant program has been established," said Marian Clowes, Foundation Program Officer. "This grant enables us to quickly help RCHS in their recovery efforts." www.pacfwv.com PACF is a laudable organization which we count on to provide scholarship aid for our youth.

AND our own Doddridge County Humane Society, after so much time, so much work, and so many marvelous fundraisers, has acquired property for their facility!!! Congratulations – and many thanks for not giving up! Ground breaking will be as soon as the ground can be broken

John E. Vail has provided us with a bit of news that will leave you cheering. He married Patricia E. Gaston (Vail), who was in the Doddridge class of 1964 and they are now living in Chester County, PA. This year, she won the November election for Township Supervisor with the highest number of votes ever gotten by one person. Pat's father was Alfred Gaston and her grandfather was Ira Gaston. We're sure she's buried in details right now, but congratulations may be sent to pvail@zoominternet.net

Many thanks to those who braved the weather to come to the WestUnionFest meeting. Some fantastic ideas were floated and plans will be solidified at the 2/25/10 meeting (Town Hall at 4PM – Please attend). Not only is this year shaping up as a spectacular festival, but it will be themed in honor of two wonderful groups – Our own West Union Volunteer Fire Department, which is celebrating a Very important anniversary and ECV (E Clampus Vitis), which will have a delegation of members attending from points West. Wait until they see what's in store for them!! Friday night, in particular has grown in interest and activity – including the VFD Beauty Contest, return of the award-winning Elite Twirlers, and a possible Talent Show. Best get started on those Outhouse Floats now!!

Robert Bonar <cobcom78@yahoo.com> has been researching the football history of West Union/Doddridge County High School and would like to share some of the information he's found, as well as ask some questions to help fill out his research. He's learned that "West Union played its first season in 1919, and hosted its first home game against Shinnston. That year they also hosted Victory in VHS's first ever football game. In 1930, West Union participated in the first night game in the state of West Virginia, held at St. Marys. Local businessmen vowed to erect lights in West Union immediately, but DCHS did not actually get lights until 1947." This is a long letter, so we've put it on the website to save space here. As a Town, we had a lot to be thankful for this year. Among many others:

The Greenwood Water project has brought joy and increased quality of life for so many residents.
The Rebert house is a shining example of what can be done when a community comes together.
First steps are being taken for the massive Wabash sewer / roads project.
The Courthouse Clock is repaired and running!
The Wi-Fi signs at the entrances to Town are the special creation of WVDOH for us!

WestUnionFest meeting was very productive. Thanks to Betty Curtis for the labels and Danny Rock for lending us his Michels Pharmacy's 2010 calendars, and thanks to Howard Eakles and Howard's Carpet for lending us theirs. Mary Beth Cox and her two granddaughters took on the task of labeling the Spurgeon's Funeral Home 2010 Calendars Spurgeon's – over 900 local calendar owners will now have their own reminder of the Festival (July 23-24 this year) We are working on West Union Bank's Calendars now (Thanks to Larry Marrs for picking these up). YES, there are more to do and all willing hands welcome!

Josh Weekley writes "Clara Grandt finished in 14th place at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Another All-American performance for our little Clara. She's come a long, long way."

Josh is to be congratulated on the 11/8 RunWV Brandi Bowen Scholarship 5K to raise money for the Brandi Kay Bowen Scholarship Fund. They had 135 registered entrants and 129 finishers, making it thelargest road race in Doddridge County history by about 50 people. They had great support with 39 sponsors, several race-day donors, and a lot of volunteers that helped the race go (mostly) smoothly. The race was won by John King of Philippi (now a runner for Alderson-Broaddus) and Heather McDaniel of Grafton (who happens to be the head coach at Alderson-Broaddus). There was a separate walk division which was won by Donna Graham of Lowell, OH and Ernest Doll of Pennsboro. The run raised over $3,700 for the Brandi Kay Bowen Scholarship Fund. It's been way too long and I've missed you – but a personal note before we start – Thank you to those who sent get-well cards to me – and I THINK to the two wags who wished my computer well!! LOL

We've missed reporting on a lot – Here are the highlights:

The Town of West Union was the winner – not only First in the State of West Virginia, but the Only Town to receive an award – of theREAP 2009 Award. Yeppers!! Congratulations to all of you who worked on the Make It Shine Clean-Up Day last April – please take a minute and stop by Town Hall to see the award you won!! We knew what a great job it was, but who would have expected that we would win an award? The award is made from recycled bottle glass and is lovely. Councilman George Buechner and his lovely wife, Carol, attended the three-day Solid Waste Conference in Morgantown for us and accepted the award at the presentation.
A new health study showed West Virginians suffer from lack of sleep at double the national rate. West Virginia also ranks at, or near, the bottom of the nation in several important measurements of health, including obesity, smoking, heart disease and the proportion of adults with disabilities. This may, or may not, contribute to the sleep problems. (Yes, there are studies that show that obese people have problems sleeping; there are also studies that show that lack of sleep promotes obesity. Financial stress and odd-hour work shifts play roles in sleeplessness, too. We have our share of those problems.) Hi Everyone,

Yes- we are still cleaning up from WestUnionFest! Tablecloths and costumes have been laundered and boxed, posters and signs taken down and stored for next year, our new electric box is in storage, tables and chairs and tents – well, you get the picture!! Certificates have been ordered for the new course records for the "Train on the Tracks" 5K, and thanks you's are being written to our many benefactors! The website needs to be updated with winners and photos. It should all be finished within the next week to 10 days.

Most of the Fest news will be in the next newsletter.

Richard Kinney's Parade was wonderful with some walking costumes this time.
Brian Leggett's FishFest was a smashing success!
David Sandridge's "Train on the Tracks" 5K ran like clockwork and had 1/2 again as many entries as last year.
Larry Marr's Antique Car Show had 63 cars displayed and raised $1,000.00 for charity!
Diane Pitcock's Pie Eating Contest was a Blast!
Betty Curtis' BINGO was well-received and a real fun time!

Reports later on these, the Costume, and Liars' Contests (Just WAIT 'till that winning lie is typed up. Pat Daniels had them Rolling in the Hot Sauce!).

Meantime: Monte Tremont did some superb photography of the Parade;Tammy McInnes got some great shots of the race- So did T. David Franklin;Hanny Murphy turned on some great shots of the Walking Tour (I did not know so much of the Kirkwood garden was in bloom – It is gorgeous!) AND for the first time ~ Joe Manchin, III, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, declared July 24th AND July 25th West Union Days!! That's a PLURAL, my friends!! (Yes, we have the lovely Dot Underwood, who gave out the 5K trophies, to thank for that!)

One of the Big New Attractions on Main Street this year for WestUnionFest was a Photo Opportunity Mural done by our Sheila "Snoopy" Sutton. What a great idea!!!! It was a magnet for young and old alike. By next year we will have a stand built for it so that it will be freestanding. Snoopy even made faces for each, so that if only one person wanted their photo done, the faces could be popped in to cover the other holes. Unfortunately the rain did a number on the duct tape we were using to hold them there – but ideas for next year? Possibly we could put them on small hinges? For the first time, we had 47 Vendors; for the first time Vandalia Mensa was represented as well as Destination Imagination; for the first time, DCFRN had a yard sale in Spencer Park.

Bert Vanscoy won the American Flag raffled off by the American Legion.

'Won' may not be the correct word here- maybe 'earned' would be better? ButJessica and Fred Blandori went home with that fantastic prize donated byGilbert Neely for the contest for most improvement of property in West Union... The Grand Door Prize Winner of the Camera in Honor of Diana Knight Guido was drawn from Guestbook signatures by Jasmine Sponaugle, Costume Contest winner. The Drawing was presided over by Diana's father,Ronnie Knight, who was our photographer this year, and by Janice McMurdo, who provided entertainment. The Kodak Photoshare Camera was sponsored by the Doddridge County Commission and won by Florence Jeffrey, Brunswick, Ohio. Ms Jeffrey did not leave a telephone number in the Guestbook, we are trying to contact her through her email address. If you know Ms Jeffrey, please have her contact us. Depot Street to Be One-Way: At the meeting of the Town of West Union Council on July 7, 2009, difficulties with Depot Street were discussed. It was determined and voted upon to make Depot Street one-way going West. The leak, which was repaired in February, will be permanently fixed, and Depot Street will be graded and graveled. "One Way" and "Do Not Enter" signs were ordered and should be installed this week.

Many have asked about items that the Vanscoys might need. Originally, this was almost a 'use your imagination' answer; after this time though, pressing needs are: plastic bins – all shapes and sizes (shoe box to 100 gallons), plastic coat hangers, clothes iron, clothes dresser, 2 small trash cans, hair dryer, laundry supplies (clothes pins, etc). Friday 7/24/09 - The Outhouse Parade is already bigger than last year – Line up at West Union City Park at 6PM/ Parade starts at 7PM. We have another bench to be placed on Main Street which should make seating a bit better too – but do bring your blankets or lawn chairs... Come Hungry!! The West Union Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will be having their Hot Dog stand andJodie's Carnival Treats will be there (with an addition of Hamburgers and Nachos and Cheese to their usual scrumptious fare), and our restaurants: T & J's, Juliano's Pizza, and West End Café will be open. We haven't heard fromSnooks yet... There will also be a table there to register for Saturday's "Train on the Tracks" 5K and "FishFest" fishing competition.

Saturday 7/25/09 – Once again – Come Hungry! LOL Start with that fantasticBreakfast at the Lions' Club. Doddridge County Starting Points will display free Parenting information, and West Virginians for Life, are among our non-profits who will be giving out free information. MENSAWV Vandalia Chapter, and Destination Imagination are new to the Festival. Let's give a warm welcome to all of our new friends!!!!

Don't forget to ride the Covered Wagon Shuttle – free of charge. These are the same wagons used at Blennerhassett. Daniel Friend has been working like crazy getting better signs for the shuttle stops for this year – there will be 4 access points: At the Bike Rack on Main Street, where the RailTrail comes closest to J&J's, at West Union City Park, and at Smithton Depot Museum. The Museum will be open till 1PM. The FRN is having a Blowout Yard Salethere in Spencer Park – so don't miss the Smithburg addition to the Festival!! This is a great place to park, too and avoid the traffic jams Ride the Shuttle in.

BINGO! Will be in front of West Union Bank beginning at noon on Saturday.

Doddridge County Humane Society will have KiddieLand at Cornerstone's upper parking lot and their Pet Contest at 11AM and the Little Miss and Mr. Contest at 12 Noon. West Union Baptist Church will have a Social in the church where coins will be given out for the kids to use in games behind the church in their lot.

Contests: Costume Contest, Liars' Contest, Little Miss and Mr. Contest, Pet Contest, NEW: TUG-OF-WAR, and trophy presentations and drawing will be held on Main Street, "Train on the Tracks" 5K begins in Smithburg at 8AM sharp, "FishFest" will be held at the Doddridge Middle School stocked Pond.

The Antique Car Show is bigger than ever. Our Company D Civil War Re-enactors will be back as well as the Middle Island creek People. The Historic Walking Tour will be at 11 AM and 1PM. For WestUnionFest 128, in Honor ofDiana Knight Guido, The Grand Prize Drawing (from Guestbook signatures) will be a Camera - Sponsored by the Doddridge County Commission

Hi Everyone,

It's the age-old story of not having time to issue the newsletter when things, they are a-poppin'!! What a fast two weeks this has been!

Congratulations to our new Mayor, Robert (Bob) F. Fetty!! Thanks to our outgoing Mayor Charles Langfitt for his years of service!! National politics could take a few pointers from these two gentlemen that West Union can be proud of!

The hottest items in town are the WestUnionFest Updates – (July 24-25, 2009)

*Special note on the Fishing Contest: FishFest is held in a stocked pond at the Doddridge County Middle School. The only live bait allowed will be worms, as is usual in a stocked body of water. (Some minnows COULD grow and change the fish population.) Records of fish species and sizes will be tracked at weigh-in, with Citation fish applications available and provided by DNR. (Bubby) Gain visited the Doddridge County library and left a disk with Sheila that has all of the 480 checkers games played in the 1927 Second International Checker Match between the United States and England. The Hill Family Reunion will be held in Smithburg at or near the old Smithburg School on Jul 12 this year. (In the past it has been the 3rd Saturday of September at the Doddridge County Park).

Hi Everyone,

Once again, we are SO inundated with West Union Activities! Isn't this great??

Our Lead Story is about one of our local Superstars, Clara Grant. She's at it again! On March 27th, she competed in a meet at Stanford University and ran the 10,000 Meter Run (that's 25 laps around the track). Clara shattered the WVU school record in the event by 58 seconds, clocking a 33:16. That's just under 80 seconds per lap, meaning that Clara averaged about 5:20 per mile for the race. As a point of reference, her best mile time in High School was a 5:18, and she was very good at that point. Now, she's averaging that for 6 miles. That is what hard work and commitment can do for you. Her 33:16 was not only a massive school record, but also Automatically Qualified her for the NCAA National Championships that are held in June. Also, that time would have qualified her for the Olympic Trials last year. So many thanks to Josh Weekley for keeping us in the loop... Clara, you've made us so proud!

He has also arranged for the Muskee club to give boating safety lessons on Fest Day, and added activities for the kids. The contest will feature Catch and Release with Barbless hooks. "Make It Shine" clean-up was such a huge success. Thank you to all who participated! Everyone will be relieved to know that the flood last week was not that damaging to the clean-up project. A lot of debris is caught on the bridges again, but plans are being made to take care of that. The bank account is now set up for the Vanscoy Fire Donation Fund. It is atWest Union Bank. Do help! The least amount donated makes a huge difference for those who have lost so much. When added to others, it can truly be a help. Robin and Bert Vanscoy lost their home in March's fire. We are blessed that they were not hurt, but their pets were lost in the fire. A trailer is available and being used. Connecting the utilities is expensive and clothing and household items must be replaced. Nazareth Farms has helped with the removal of some debris. Please donate. Also, if anyone has photos that might include family members, copies would be appreciated. All personal items were lost.

Penny J. Abrams has been trying unsuccessfully to get newspaper articles about her grandfather's death in West Union in September, 1951 (possibly Sept. 1, 1951.). Her understanding is that he was stranded on the railroad tracks in his car and couldn't get out in time before the train hit him. He died instantly at the age of 61. Cindy Bateman's grandfather, Edwin Cauldwell Grant married Olive Robison. Olive passed away when her father was around 12 yrs of age. Sarah K. Holt has sent us a Press Release about the Doddridge County Community Foundation working to meet a Benedum Foundation Challenge. In March of 2008, the Doddridge County Community Foundation (DCCF) was awarded a $15,000 challenge grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation. From the days of experimental wireless to our day of worldwide communications, HAMs have been on the cutting edge of communication – and made it fun. Congratulations to DCARS! Amateur Radio licensees have studied and passed required tests and been issued a call sign, unique to each operator, by the government. (Amateur Radio is not be confused with CB radio which is limited and unlicensed.) To quote the Wall street Examiner, "HR-875 appears to make it illegal to privately grow and sell food, or even to privately grow food for personal consumption, without extraordinary government regulation! The bill would impede personal gardens, the raising of animals (chickens, goats, etc.), invoke government surveillance over all aspects of food production, storage and distribution, impose identical requirements upon countries that wish to export food to the United States, require annual registration by food producers, etc. It's been sponsored by 37 Democrats, suggesting that the possibility of passage in the near future is real." Charleston: The House of Delegates voted 87-11 Monday to send the Senate a measure that
would use extension agents in collect ing global positioning system coordinates for a statewide map of grave sites. This means that our county extension service that aids West Virginia farmers may also help the state keep tabs on its cemeteries. This is help froman unexpected quarter for a profound need. Our small community cemeteries, and the history they contain, are being lost to time, neglect, mining, timbering and development.

Pauline Gray-Snitwongse is searching for information about Thomas Gray(born about 1787, age 63 in 1850). He appears in the 1850 census living next to his son Thomas S. Gray and family. Is there a book of biographies on early Doddridge WV residents? Trying to tie him to her ancestors John Gray and family in Greene county, Pennsylvania. Her John Gray (3xggrandfather) died in Greene Co., Pa. In 1847, and a son (Thomas Gray) who does not appear to live in the area contested the will. Thomas was probably the 1st or 2nd born son and was by John's 1st wife whose name is unknown at this time. Suspect the son Thomas died in 1867 . Any help appreciated.

Is your expensive Microsoft Office suite outdated and in need of an upgrade? I've been testing Sun's OpenOffice for about 5 months now and couldn't be happier with the ease of operation and the bug-free operation. Best of all, files saved in other formats can be opened in OpenOffice, worked on, and saved back to the other format (such as Microsoft 2003 or Excel 2000, etc.). Well, maybe that's not the 'Best of All' – did we mention that it is Free? http://www.openoffice.org/ for download

Larry Marrs sent us a note on Sergeant John Hoxie being featured on an Oprah episode filmed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Sgt. Hoxie, a member of the American Legion in post 44 Philippi, is undergoing rehabilitation there for extensive injuries received in Baghdad. Alcon sent their remote control concrete truck (what a fascination!) The foundation was in by 10:00AM and the guys were off to do good somewhere else! The framing and crews (Cook Excavating & Building) will be rolling into town soon. (Roof trestles will arrive Friday the 20th and a tractor-trailer will deliver the walls on the 23rd). Crews will then begin on the roof. Anyone wishing to join the fun and fellowship – come on down. Food donations and kitchen help are still needed at the Assemblies of God Fellowship Hall. Monetary donations are still needed for finishing touches.

SUNDAY – 3/22/09 – West Union's LARGEST Banana Split EVER!! Come and invite a friend to West Union Baptist Church (Cottage Ave. & Court Street). Morning worship will be followed by a covered dish dinner where an Eight Foot Banana Split will be served.

California has 1,971 projects and Florida 1,752 projects; but our WV, so lacking in infrastructure, only gets ONE?? (Not to mention that it is difficult to imagine how building a new courthouse qualifies under 'Energy')

Gerald Swick, who writes that lovely column in the Exponent Telegram, writes that there was a skirmish in West Union during the Civil War. Seems the Rebs were trying to keep the troops here occupied while General William "Grumble"Jones' troops moved west to Wirt County. It will be great to get more information on this – and possibly an Historical Marker. Interestingly, Grumble Jones was the gr grandfather of our Mayor Charles Langfitt.

Tammy McGinnis reminds us that beginning on March 8, 2009, the WV Fone Net will start at 6:00 PM. Daily. The frequency continues to be 3811 kHz. March 8 is the first day of Daylight Saving Time. Daytime is 11:45am on 3.865 - this will stay the same. Monthly meeting is the last Tuesday of the Month, 7pm at the Doddridge County Senior Citizen Building in West Union. Josh Weekley writes that Clara Grandt finished 3rd in the Big East Conference Indoor Championships in NY in the 5000 Meter Run, setting a WVU school record in the process. Her time was 16:21. Congratulations, Clara!! (and thank you, Josh)
Roxanne Fritz writes that the Pet Pantry is now located at the Doddridge County Starting Points Center, which is above and behind the DEO Food Pantry. Hours are the same: Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. until noon, so that people who come to the food pantry can just come around back for pet food. For Pet Pantry info or to pick up pet food donations, call 304-873-3500 or her home 304-873-1444. Box 206, Smithburg, WV 26436. (Editor's Note: This is a vital service to Doddridge! Since they opened in December, over 68 families have been helped to feed over 125 dogs and over 159 cats with 616.8 pounds of dog food and 154 pounds of cat food given out.) (This averages out to about 5 pounds of dog food per dog and 1 pound of cat food per cat, not enough to feed any pet for a whole month, but helps make ends meet so people can keep their pet in hard times)

Charlie Gallagher advises that the mandatory DTV switch date has been moved from Feb. 17 to June 12, 2009. Some TV stations began transmitting in digital on the Feb 17th deadline, most are waiting. Sue Kittredge reminds us that the McClellan District Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary will be sponsoring a Spring Fling event on Friday, March 27, 2009, at the McClellan District Volunteer Fire Department Building. The public is invited to attend this function for dinner, music, and dancing. Dinner will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Take-out dinners will be available. The music for this event is to be donated by the popular local group, "Rewind." Advance tickets cost $5.00 each and tickets at the door will be $6.00 each. Children ages 3 through 10 - $3.00 each, children under three ys. - no charge. Door prizes! Menu: ham or chicken, potato salad, baked beans, rolls and butter, iced tea or coffee and dessert. d. abt 1889 in Leadville, Colorado; Mary Jane Leggett, b. 6/1834 in Virginia (West Virginia); parents of Virginia, m. 6/26/1849 to Irwin Durious Myers in Doddridge County, (West) Virginia, d. abt 1905 in Leadville, Colorado
1849 - Married in Doddridge County, (West) Virginia
1850 - Unable to locate census record for them
1860 - Irwin and Mary Jane appear in the 1860 census for Pleasants County, (West) Virginia with their children.
Irwin's mother, Sarah, b. abt 1804 Pennsylvania, is living with them.
I believe Mary Jane had a brother named Preston, but unconfirmed and I have been unable to locate him.

Hi Everyone,

Have you been to the Doddridge County Library lately? Just painted- and GORGEOUS! Sure, it is clean and nice and neat (with tons of new books to check out), but once again West Union talent has turned something nice intoArt. Snoopy Sutton did a darling mural running across the wall in the children's room. Be sure to check out the wall when you check out the books … LOL AND it seems we have more mystery talent here – take a look at the fireplace in the front reading / checkers room; who did that? It is so kewl!

Walt Dotson responded to Lisa Schulte's request for a picture of the 'Old Ford Garage' on Chevront Ave. See http://www.westunion-wv.com/history/photos7.htm From Walt, " My Grandpa Henry Amos Richards (known as 'Red' or Amos) was a mechanic there. This photo was taken in front of the garage in the late 40's or very early 50's. I believe the heavy man in the center was the owner. Man in dark shirt is my grandpa. WestUnionFest meeting was once again exciting and thrumming with energy. It is amazing to hear the creative ideas of those involved. Some are surprises (only because all of the details are not yet worked out) , but everyone will be as thrilled as we are to welcome Julie Roberts as the new vendor coordinator. As you know this was our weak point last year, but it appears that Main Street will not be enough to hold all who are going to be involved this year. Isn't that exciting? Julie has been involved with the Appalachian Glass Festival in the past. And, we welcome (with open arms) Amanda Daugherty, who has taken over the job of calendar entries on the Internet. Daniel Bowman is looking for just the right piece of plywood for a special Snoopy project; Brian Lipscombhas plans for expanding the fishing competition; and some of the most exciting "etceteras" you've ever heard! Next Meeting 3/18/09... Please come!

Hi everyone,

We are still under a Boil Water advisory and a Conserve Water advisory. (Probably until sometime tomorrow or Saturday – so watch the local news! The water main was repaired as of 2/10, but the water tanks must be totally refilled before the Health Department can run their tests.) Thanks to Channel 5 and Channel 12 for their updates!

Hope this finds everyone safe and well after that wind-storm last night? We know that many are without electricity and telephone – once again ; but be proud, as what we are beginning to feel is an inconvenience would paralyze most counties.

Does everyone have their tin-cans ready with the string so that you can at least talk to your neighbor without going out in the storm? It seems we must stop being whatever we are being- (are we nice? Or apathetic?) and learn the fine Art of Effective Complaint to get something done with the utilities here.

Howard Gain has a checkers website at www.mycheckerworld.com that a lot of us will enjoy. (This classic game conjures up families at the kitchen table at the end of along day, doesn't it?) Currently, he also has pictures of the air shows at Tyndall Air Force Base, several photos of their home place on Big Flint, and narrated checker games with positions diagrammed between England and the United States dating back to 1927. A nice nostalgic browse!

Tammy McGinnis writes to let us know that the DCARS repeater system has been improved. Thanks to Waine, Sam, Paul, Monte and Willard, the antenna is now around 15 feet higher and it is now heard further toward Clarksburg! Next project will be the Station Master Antenna above the water tower (Will they hear us in Timbuktu?) Next meeting is Feb.24th, 7PM At the Sr. Ctr. (146.955 -offset and pl tone of 103.5)

Terry Reed reminds us that the Doddridge County Coon Hunters meeting is at 7:00PM at the Senior Center on Thursday,2/12/09. (Y – That's TODAY!)

You All Are Wonderful! Response to the Rebuild Project for Susan Rebert is going great! We already have masons on the volunteer list (including our Racemaster for the "Train on the Tracks" 5K, Dave Sandridge) Over the next couple of days, volunteers will be moving out what can be salvaged to a stoarge unit across Rt 50 (some will go to her rented home). Demolition is set for Feb 21, 2009. Denny Powell, John Davis, John Marshall Hileman, Derek Nicholson, Ralph Sandora, Huffman Corporation have all stepped up - offering themselves and equipment. Brandon Rogers of the West Union Volunteer Fire Department states most all the guys want in; he is working on getting names as they work or sign up. Fred of Eaglesmith Signs is working on the site sign which will also let people know where & what's going on.Howard's Carpet outlet has called - Yes, Doddridge - it is happening and happening fast- Be a part and don't miss out on this wonderful community project! We have a few 2009 Predictions, and oddly enough, they are almost 'Themed'.

"CatsPaw" predicts that there will be more accountability in local government, as more people are now involved in it and alert to abuses.

Maryjo Kittredge predicts: 1) that it will be a great prayer year, with all sorts of marvelous happenings, miracles, great fortune to those that God deems trustworthy. And people will openly admit their love for Christ and their fellow man. and 2) that those of us that are of a wasteful nature, will see the light and become consumer savvy. We will go back to our humble beginnings and then fully understanding the warnings from our mothers and fathers of "waste not; want not".

Sandra Lynch predicts that 2009 will be a more spiritual year for most of us.

Carolyn Walker predicts that this year will see a return to the 'Victory Gardens' of the past, with neighbors sharing the planting and care.

The WestUnionFest Committee would like to thank Middle Island Press for their donation of profits on the Doddridge County Poetry Chapbook. The poetry is lovely as is the book – a fitting tribute to our beautiful county. The work involved was already very appreciated; to donate the profits to our festival is above and beyond! Thank you!

DCARS Monthly meeting is the LAST TUESDAY of the Month, At 7pm at the Doddridge County Senior Citizen Building in West Union.

Dave Sandridge writes that he would like to be the first to congratulate Clara Grandt for finishing 8th at The United States World Cross Country Trials on Saturday, Feb. 7th, 2009 at The Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood, Md., with a time of 28:22. Her finish places her in the pool of athletes who could be selected to represent Team USA at the North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association Cross Country Championships at Chain of Lakes Park in Orlando, Fla. on march 7, and at the IAFF World Cross Country Championships March 28, in Amman, Jordan. Clara, the rest of us run a close second to say "Congratulations!"

hmmm – Is it time to show what Doddridge is made of? On January 22, Susan Rebert lost her home, her job, and all of her furnishings in that terrible fire across the street from Dollar General in West Union. A single mother, with two young sons, Susie had no insurance. What can YOU volunteer? How can YOU help? Everyone has something to offer – and this time, we need it all! Can you haul debris? Can you volunteer to serve food to other volunteers? Can you paint? Hang Blinds? If you have ever moved, you already know a lot of what is involved here. Do you have building skills? A couple of contractors have gotten together – spearheaded by "By Grace Masonry" and plan on a West Virginia Makeover! Donations of supplies and labor and talent will help make this miracle for one of our own. More information will be on the website by this weekend.
